I’ve said it before and I don’t mind saying it again, I’m not a fan of country music, plain and simple. Although this is the case, I make pretty much one singular exception, and that is for Turbo. While people might debate whether or not this is actually Country or not, there is a clear overtone of the genre, so I don’t see why it’s not. Aside from this, Turbo mashes multiple different genres together including Hip-Hop, Pop, and various other elements that highlight a plethora of styles, bringing them all together for the perfect storm. His voice is just awesome in my opinion as well, because it has a slight trademark accent, despite him being from Canada, and the gritty rasp of his singing is just captivating to me.
Most recently, he dropped off a brand-new music video for his hit song entitled “18”, and I couldn’t be more excited. Considering the track has been out for a few months, I’m going to focus more on the visual because it’s got many different parts to it and a storyline that is compelling, so you can listen if you haven’t already while watching to kill two birds with one stone.
As the Social Circle Club-directed visual opens up, Turbo is cruising down the street in the middle of a slight snowstorm, eventually pulling up and parking at a house. He treks through the snow up to the front door and knocks, but when no one answers, he heads back to his car and puts his head on the steering wheel in distress as a lovely lady peers out of the window at the artist. He eventually pulls off and begins to sing while the pain behind his eyes as well as his vocals is obvious.
At night, he heads to a well-lit football field that is dusted in snow, laying down on the turf while throwing a football in the air, clearly contemplating what is unfolding within his relationship. The next scene takes us back in time to the first moment he laid eyes on this beautiful girl, someone who clearly changed his life, and the approach he takes to introduce himself in the middle of the library. While she doesn’t seem to fall into his charm right off the bat, he persists and continues to try and get her attention, some hard work that eventually pays off as they begin to go on dates and hangout.
As the relationship continues to unfold, frustrations arise and their bond seems to be put to the test, however it seems as if they continue to have fun in order to avoid the struggles. Finally, things seem to come crashing down as he hangs out backstage before one of his shows, receiving a text that appears to not be what he was hoping to see. Nonetheless, he grabs the microphone, hits the stage, and performs for all of his fans as if nothing happened, moving on with his life and the unique musical lifestyle he has grown accustomed to.
Turbo is one of the most captivating young artists I can think of, and he continues to impress me every step of the way. His style is individualistic, his singing is incredible, and the way he blends various genres together is seamless, so I’m not sure how people could possibly not enjoy his music. Aside from this, his music videos seem to tell a story and contain a plot, which adds so much more to the narratives he’s detailing in his music, and it just extends the scenarios in such a remarkably interesting fashion. I heard that during quarantine, he has been stuck in his hometown up north much longer than he had expected, but he’s making the most of his time as he continues to gift fans unbelievable music, so I can’t complain whatsoever. Whether you’ve been bumping “18” since it dropped in September or this is your first time hearing about it, make sure you tune into the brand-new music video below and see Turbo’s artistry for yourself.
